When it comes to shovelhead what exactly comes on your mind first? For those of you who think that it’s the part on a shovel where you dig dirt well you’re totally off, because that’s exactly what I thought when I first heard it. Harley shovelhead would probably give you a little hint that shovelhead must be something that comes off a motorcycle which it is or at least use to. This allows you to understand that not everything is what it seems if you’re going off the top by its name.

A V-twin engine that is air cooled and powerful that was manufactured by the Harley Davidson Company during 1966 to 1984. They got the name base on the similarity features that you see on the coal shovels.

During that time when Harley’s had the panhead people demanded more of a stronger type of bike as far as acceleration power goes. So the Harley Davidson shovelhead was introduced which replaced the panhead with not only powerful cylinder but also powerful piston which were enough to give the power they needed.

Just like many things that are out there when it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Although it had its power that people wanted it had some negative side to it as well. For the motorcycle to be powerful it needed a modification to its engine which turned out that the engine was just too heavy making the bike itself hard to steer and make it weave at high speed. Through many modifications they found that it was time to give this engine and break and come out with a new one. Realizing this found by many bikers they had to replace it with a new engine blockhead.

Harley Davidson shovelhead motorcycles sure grasp long history in the Harley Davidson business and just like everything else, there’s always ways to improve things and make it better and faster. I believe currently Harley motorcycles are using the twin cam engine which replaced the blockhead. Throughout time all it really was like nearly everything else is using what we learn from the past and integrating it to make it better and giving it a new name.

If you search around you will still see Harley Davidson shovelhead parts around. There are people who still have shovelhead on their bike just because they still love how that bike feels. If you look at the history of Harley’s engine it’s just interesting how Harley has went through so many different types of engine just so we can get the best out of it.
